Everyone is welcome to shop at GLUT Food Co-opno membership or special card is required! We offer quality Vegetarian Natural Foods at a reasonable price. Among our specialties are organic and local produce, cheese and our bulk department, where you will find grains, beans, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, baking supplies, granola, coffee, herbs and spices, pasta and more. We also offer environmentally friendly health and beauty products, food supplements, vitamins and sundries.

Our store opens at 9 a.m. daily (Tues.-Fri. 9-8, Sat.-Mon. 9-7), except on selected holidays. GLUT is a not-for-profit charitable trust, democratically managed by a collective whose members share equal responsibility for the store. We support local and/or organic enterprises over conglomerates and agribusiness whenever possible. Glut has traditionally supported peace, environmental and social justice movements. This is rooted in our founding by conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War

Meet GLUT's Collective Members

You see them every time you shop at GLUT: The Collective is GLUT's paid staff. GLUT is a Workers' Collective — a business owned and operated by the workers. Workers control the assets of the business and decide jointly how the business should be organized and run. GLUT uses a consensus-based decision-making process. Every member of the collective is a member of the Board of Directors, and every member of the Board of Directors has equal say in the making of all decisions.

There are three levels of workers at GLUT: (1) full-time, part owners called Collective Members, (2) part-time Support Workers and (3) Volunteers. Typically, Support Workers are former Collective Members who chose to cut back, or newer employees who wish to join the collective eventually. To be considered as a Collective Member or Support Worker, you must volunteer at GLUT for a minimum of six months. The best way to get hired is to volunteer a lot and really get to know GLUT and our staff.

Anybody can be a Volunteer, and you don't need any special training. Volunteers get paid $6.15 per hour of work (Maryland minimum wage) in "scrip" (store credit). Store credit is calculated in our computer system and can be used for purchases on the day of work or saved up for later use. We have one Volunteer for each staffing shift throughout the week. The GLUT workday starts an hour before we open and ends an hour after we close. We have three shifts daily. They are Morning (8 a.m. - 1 p.m.), Afternoon (1 - 5 p.m.) and Evening (5-8 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday; 5-9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday).

To sign up for a volunteer shift , call GLUT at (301) 779-1978 anytime after 9 a.m. on Sundays. You will be told what shifts are available for the following week (A GLUT workweek runs from Tuesday through Monday, a little confusing at first, but our uniqueness is what makes us wonderful!).

We are sad to report that the Season for fresh pressed Heyser Farms came to an abrupt early end this year due to the cold weather. We look forward to their cider next fall!

Here at "Natures Yoke" our goal is to bring to you our own local family farm raised quality products.
Our eggs are produced on small local farms in the heart of Lancaster County and surrounding areas. These small scale farms have the ability to produce quality specialty eggs by utilizing careful farm management and hen care. We use no drugs or antibiotics to maintain hen health. Our chickens are fed a vegetarian diet with no animal fats or animal by-products in the feed and have the freedom to roam around and scratch about at will.

Grind Your Own Nut Butters at GLUT!
Did you know that you can now grind your own nut butters at GLUT? You can't get them any fresher than that — and both the aroma and the taste are scrumptious! Peanuts and almonds are usually loaded and ready to be ground in the self-serve machines, located across the aisle from the bulk herbs and spices. If you need assistance with the nut butter machines, feel free to ask any GLUT staff member for help.

Featured Product: Dallas Popcorn is Back! Same great taste, new clear bags. Check them out at Glut, or online.

FORMERLY FEATURED PRODUCTS AND SUPPLIERS

Do You Own a GLUT Bag?
We sell large, heavy-duty cotton shopping bags with GLUT's colorful Big Carrot logo printed on both sides so that, no matter how you hold it, you can proclaim your allegiance to our small, democratically managed, not-for-profit natural foods co-op. The bags are available with either short or long handles for $5.00 each. Buy them at the store when you check out.

If you've been to Glut recently, you may have noticed we now charge 10 cents for our large size paper bags, and 5 cents for our plastic (actually biodegradable corn) bags. We took this step to really encourage people to re-use their bags instead of getting new ones each time you shop.
